l Taurine, Computer Geeks & Acrophobia
‘You need to get out more’. How much of a computer’s geek’s social awkwardness is lack of social contact and how much of it is technology induced anxiety? Computers and video games are highly visual, where two dimensions are designed to look like three, and audio as an accent. The body is designed to use all of its senses synergistically to attain the basic life requirements, nutrition, companionship and safety. That results in all of the systems receiving what they need to perform well.
When a person relies on one system to the exclusion of the others they consume those sense specific nutrients faster and weird side effects happen. The secret to resolving this is to load up on that nutrient group. This is nothing new when it comes to body systems, construction workers rely heavily on their muscles so they consume lean meats, aka steak. During the Second World War in the Battle of Britain they fed carrots to the RAF pilots because of their reputed benefits for the eyes. They should have added the herbs Eyebright and Bilberry for their nutritive and anti-oxidant qualities.
One of the critical nutrients that computer workers and video game players go through is the amino acid l taurine. Not only is it an important nutrient for the eyes, it is a neurotransmitter that helps the nervous system function and is essential for maintaining a calm, social personality. It is a sulfur based amino acid so that it is most prevalent in meats and fish, not vegetables, fruits or grains. Imagine the typical computer geek/game player’s diet, carbs from grains, dairy, sugar and salt; a little low in amino acid bearing protein. Since they are rapidly using up their l taurine they become anxious, and since they don’t get enough protein they get flabby. There doesn’t seem to be any situation where flabby is a compliment.
Supplementing with large amounts of l taurine may get those cubicle/basement dwelling ‘shut ins’ back out into the world again, social and calm. Other nutrients that will help are B-5 Pantothene, the herb Passion Flower, and the mineral magnesium which helps the body deal with the tightening effects of the electromagnetic fields.
