The outside of us is a direct reflection of what’s going on in the inside, so the care of hair, skin and nails is not simply a matter of vanity! Of course, we’re fond of saying that people will do for vanity what they would never do for sanity, meaning, whatever works!

Essential Fatty Acids are the basis for healthy hair, skin and nails because, just like the other systems in the body, fats maintain our youth. Babies have a high fat to muscle ratio and wouldn’t you love to have their skin? A healthy helping of the good fats, such as those found in Omega, Super GLA or, to a lesser degree, in Flax Seed Oil, plumps lines and wrinkles better than a botox injection! We don’t really have to mention how we feel about the concept of injecting botulism into the body, do we? Fats also provide a protective buffer around all cells, including skin cells. This helps to prevent organisms from entering the body through the skin so good fats become your first line of defense against viruses, bacteria and yeast.

Collagen is a component of skin as well. It forms the matrix that holds the cells together and keeps them from drooping. Hmmm… sounds like an awfully good idea to us! We think little chipmunk cheeks only look good on chipmunks! The fact that those 9 capsules of Collatrim daily will rebuild ligaments and connective tissue while it firms your jaw line is just one of those happy herbal side-effects. L-Carnitine is an essential amino acid that contributes to muscle tone. We love that it will tone your heart at the same time that it firms up that wiggle waggle under your arm!

Hair and nails are very similar in composition so they need the same kind of nutrients to be well fed. Natural silica is important because it contributes strength and resilience to both hair and nails. There are a lot of herbs like horsetail and cornsilk that contain specific nutrients for hair and nails so a combination is the way to cover all of the bases. HSN Complex and the Natria™ line of skin care products are formulated to feed Hair, Skin and Nails and to care for them daily without harmful chemicals such as those contained in other skin care lines.

Collagen and keratin are protein components of hair, skin and nails so remember that you want good, high quality protein in your daily diet to rebuild them. Undigested carbohydrates floating around in the bloodstream are a common cause of acne, itching, hives and blotchy skin so keep the carbs down to a minimum.

As a side note, beware of putting commercial hair care, skin care and make up products on your skin. Most lipsticks and mascaras contain lead and aluminum to say nothing of the artificial colors and other carcinogenic additives. Find a good natural make up line, like Dr. Hauschka, available at health conscious grocery stores like Whole Foods or Wild Oats. Shampoos, shower gels and conditioners often contain harmful chemicals as well that are readily absorbed through the skin. Protect your skin and hair by using Natria™ Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash to as your first line of defense against pollutants and the elements.

Then drink plenty of pure water and get out into the fresh air every day. Your skin will thank you and so will your colon, your heart, your lungs… you get the idea.
